GMDSS VHF RADIO - RYA SHORT RANGE COURSE (SRC)
This radio course is appropriate for sailors using VHF equipment (hand held or fixed)
The SRC course will give students practical knowledge of Radio Voice Procedures, the Channels to use, and the ability to use the equipment effectively in all situations.
Modern VHF equipment also incorporate Digital Selective Calling (DSC) which is a key component of the GMDSS system. The course will enable you to gain 'hands-on' skills with DSC in a controlled enviroment.
Familiarisation with other GMDSS equipment i.e. Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB), NAVTEX and SARTS,will also be covered.
The SRC certificate is a pre-requisite for the RYA Yachtmaster course.
Entry requirements:
Knowledge of the Phonetic Alphabet
Provide 1 recent Passport Photograph
Note a £30 RYA Certificate issue fee is payable on the day.

LONG RANGE COURSE (LRC) (SSB)
The Long Range Certificate will be of particular interest to Ocean-going yachtsman who wish to use HF (SSB) radio.
Modern SSB Transmitters incorporate Digital Selective Calling (DSC) which in an emergency allows digital alerting to Shore Authorities and other vessels at long distances.
The SSB equipment can also be used for Voice communications on Radio Nets and the reception of weather information and international broadcasters such as the BBC World Service. With additional equipment, SSB can also be used to send emails.
The course is quite practical and covers DSC, VHF, Navtex, EPIRBs, SARTS in addition to SSB NAVTEX and SARTS.will also be covered

Holding a SRC certificate desireable.
Note a £95 MCA Examination fee is payable to the examiner.

RYA RADAR COURSE
Setting up and Interpreting a Radar picture takes a little skill and understanding.
This course is for anyone who wishes to learn how to use their radar effectively for both navigation and collision avoidance.
Using an approved RYA Computer simulation package, the student will gain quite realistic practical radar experience.
Additionally, the course will give a intoduction to MARPA, Radar Transponders and AIS.
Included in the course fee is the 'RYA Introduction to Radar Book', and a RYA Radar completion certificate.
Entry requirements:
No previous RADAR experience is required but a little basic chart work skills would be beneficial.

GMDSS RESTRICTED OPERATORS CERTIFICATE (ROC)
The Restricted Operators Certificate (ROC) is a STCW 95 qualification for vessels or Rigs which operate in GMDSS Sea Area A1. The GMDSS ROC will be of particular interest for candidates for MCA 200 tons certificates and Pilots, Harbour Masters and marine shore staff wishing to maintain valid seagoing qualifications.
