The Level 2 course follows on from the RYA Level 1 Dinghy Sailing Course which must be completed before starting Level 2. On completion of this level, the successful sailor will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing on all points of sail without an instructor on board. This course follows on from Level 2 and works on improving level 2 skills and an insight into the advanced modules. It will focus on improving your individual skills whilst introducing some advanced techniques which are covered fully in the following advanced module courses. Weekend course. Sailing Lessons

On completion of this course the successful sailor will be able to sail a dinghy with either an asymmetric or symmetric spinnaker. At HLSTC we usually start with the Asymmetric system and use our Omega and Laser 2000s, however Bosuns with symmetrical spinnakers may also be introduced. Timings are: 1030 - 1630 and course takes place over two Saturdays.

This course is designed to give the confidence,skills and knowledge to take part in club racing in fair conditions. It will also build confidence and work on improving boat speed and boat handling skills. We commonly use single handers on this course which enables all students to practice their tactical and personal sailing skills. Timings are: 1030-1630

On completion of this course the successful sailor will be capable of manoeuvring a dinghy in a seamanlike manner. Advanced skills such as Rudderless and Backwards Sailing are covered. This course introduces the skills to be practiced before becoming a RYA Dinghy Instuctor. Timings are: 1030 - 1630 and course takes place over two Saturdays.

The Safety boat Course is a further level for those wishing to provide rescue cover for other craft including other powerboats, sailing dinghies, kayaks and windsurfers. There will be several different techniques in a variety of craft to arm you with the tools you may need in a rescue situation. Timings are: 1030 - 1630 and the course is run over two Saturdays.

  Teenies Novice sailing
  A week long course of 5 am or pm sessions forming an introduction into sailing for 5 to 7 year olds. Parents are required to stay and participate with the course. Children will start to work towards RYA stage 1 in oppies, however the primary aim of the course is to have lots of fun and build water confidence.
Entry requirements: Aged between 5 and 7 years, must be comfortable in the water (not necessarily a swimmer though), Parental assistance is required throughout.

After completing Stage 3, students should be able to sail on all points of sail and return to the shore safely on their own. There is some simple theory which the stage 3 sailor will be able to apply to their sailing. This is the minimum level for sailing without instructor supervision at HLSTC. The student should be a practiced and competent Stage 2 sailor before enrolling on stage 3. Duration: 5 days. Timings: 0900 - 1600.

Entry requirements: AGE: 8-17 YEARS. EXPERIENCE: MUST HOLD RYA STAGE 2 AND BE A COMPETENT STAGE 2 SAILOR. AFTER GAINING STAGE 2, ONE SEASON'S FREQUENT SAILING IS ADVISED BEFORE STARTING THIS COURSE.

On successful completion of this course the sailor will be able to sail a dinghy to an advanced level and will have an heightened awareness of sailing in a seamanlike manner. Advanced skills such as rudderless sailing and reefing afloat will be introduced and sailors will be taught how to be more independent. In addition, the student will learn to control a double hander with an asymmetric spinnaker. This course is advised for candidates wishing to progress to instructor level as it introduces the skills required for the pre-entry assessment. Duration: 5 days. Timings: 0900 - 1600.

New for 2011, this course is for those who have passed Level 2 on a teen course (or who have reached Stage 3 and have now grown into a teen!), and would like to improve their skills further. This week-long course follows the adult Level 3 syllabus and works on refining the student’s technique in addition to introducing higher performance equipment and advanced sailing skills. This course is tailored to the individual needs of the students and content may vary slightly.

Entry requirements: Minimum age 14 years, must hold RYA Level 2 from the adult scheme (NSS) or Stage 3 from the Children's scheme (YSS).

  Youth Dinghy Sailing Refresher
  This courses is for dinghy sailors holding either the Stage 1 or Level 1 (minimum qualification) that would like to refresh their skills. This course is also for those who may still have a few sections of their logbook to complete. This course is a coaching course and so content will vary with all students being coached to improve their skill set. This is aimed at the Stage 1-3 standard, those working on Stage 4 should follow the private tuition route.

  Hawley Lake Assistant Instructors Course
  This course is to qualify potential instructors as assistants at Hawley Lake. It is an RYA qualification, but is site specific: i.e. it is only valid at HLSTC. Students must be at least 15 years old, be a member at HLSTC and hold Stage 4 plus an advanced module (preferably Seamanship skills and preferably two modules). The course trains potential AIs to operate safely and professionally at HLSTC and is an excellent foundation for becoming a full RYA DI at 16 years. There will be both shore-based and afloat sessions and 1 day will be spent assisting RYA SIs with real students. This course does not guarantee work either paid or voluntary at HLSTC

  This 1 day RYA First Aid Course covers all the usual subjects, but is particularly useful for those working in the marine industry and for water users. The subjects specific to boating include: The recovery position in a confined space, CPR: including drowning protocol, cold shock and hypothermia from immersion / exposure, seasickness and dehydration, requesting medical assistance by VHF and helicopter rescue. It is the recommended course for RYA Instructors, RYA Senior Instructors and Safety-boat Drivers.

We allow a slightly longer duration on this course to allow students to find their own enjoyment in the sport. The award can be taken in any style of kayak or canoe e.g. open canoes, closed cockpit kayak, sit on top kayak, slalom kayak. At HLSTC we will be using a combination of these and students may also bring personal kit providing it is insured, meets the required safety regulations and we have notice in advance. The award is for sheltered waters. Starts 0900 - 1600, 2 days.
Entry requirements: Pre-requisites Candidates must be water confident and ideally be able to swim, however this is desirable but not essential. The age range for this course is 10 years minimum and 17 years maximum.

  This course combines the 1 and 2* awards with an experience day and assessment all in one. The 1 Star is designed to introduce people to the sport of kayaking and canoeing. The course is designed to encourage people to learn new skills through a progressive syllabus whilst having fun. This is a basic nationally recognised British Canoe Union qualification that students will typically reach after attending a course of a minimum duration of 6 quality hours water time. We allow a slightly longer duration on this course to allow students to find their own enjoyment in the sport. The 2* award is an improvement award that helps paddlers develop fundamental paddle-sport skills on flat water. The course is designed to help paddlers to gain confidence and independence so that they can attend club trips or trips with friends. This course is the foundation for people wishing to gain personal coaching qualifications. This award is usually split into a separate training and assessment course as candidates will need to gain personal paddling experience prior to returning for assessment. However, this special 4 day course will combine these elements. The award can be taken in any style of kayak or canoe e.g. open canoes, closed cockpit kayak, sit on top kayak, slalom kayak. At HLSTC we will be using a combination of these and students may also bring personal kit providing it is insured, meets the required safety regulations and we have notice in advance. The award is for sheltered waters. Starts 0900 - 1600, 4 days.
Entry requirements: Should be able to swim at least 25m wearing a buoyancy aid. Age requirements: 10 - 17 years.

  Adult Level 2 Direct Assessment
  This one day assessment is for sailors who have experience but no qualifications to prove it. You will have a couple of hours to practice and you will join in with the Level 2 course which completes on this day. The assessment will be made by an instructor and if you can complete all of the tasks competently and safely, you will be given a RYA Level 2 certificate. Logbooks are not included but can be purchased if required. This course is not for yacht sailors wishing to complete a conversion, but for existing dinghy sailors.
