RYA Coastal Skipper Practical
Advanced skippering techniques for yachtsmen and women with considerable knowledge of sailing and navigation, wanting to undertake coastal passages by day and night.
Like the Day Skipper course, this course consists of skippered passages in a variety of situations. Each trainee will skipper more challenging passages and learn more about passage planning, pilotage by day and night, boat handling, safety and emergency situations.
It is a satisfying but intensive week, with candidates often working towards a Certificate of Competence.
Most centres will expect you to complete the Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster Offshore shorebased course beforehand as there is insufficient time to teach you theory during the week.
Coastal Skippers should be able to undertake more difficult passages by day and night and handle the yacht in more demanding conditions. By the end of the course you should have the knowledge, if not the experience, to become a Yachtmaster.
Entry requirements:
Pre-course experience is 15 days, 2 days as skipper, 300 miles, 8 night hours Assumed knowledge Boat handling to the standard of Day Skipper and navigation to shorebased Coastal

RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore Preparation & Exam
To attain the RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Offshore candidates must pass a practical examination of their skippering ability. A Yachtmaster is capable of skippering the yacht on extended offshore passages by day or night. He or she will essentially be a much more experienced Coastal Skipper and can do the same things more smoothly, for longer periods and in more arduous conditions.
Early in the week the instructor will asses your strengths and weaknesses and coach you in the areas required to pass the examination however our experience normally leads us to work on the following areas; passage planning, man overboard recovery, close quarters handling, skippering techniques, navigation in restricted visibility, pilotage and knowledge of the International Collision Regulations. The instructor will debrief you fully as the week progresses and ensure that you get time to work on those weaker areas. Before joining the course, students should have the pre-requisite experience outlined above, navigation theory to RYA Coastal Skipper/Yachtmaster theory level and a thorough knowledge of the Collision Regulations.
The examiner will ask each candidate to skipper the yacht on several short passages and complete various demonstrations of their skippering and sailing ability over the course of the weekend.
The Exam is and additional costs payable to the RYA of £170

RYA Marine Radio (SRC) ~ VHF Theory Course
The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to operate a VHF radio fitted with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on any British vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio.
A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures. Unnecessary transmissions could block out a Mayday distress call.
All new VHF sets are either fitted, or can be interfaced, with DSC allowing calls to specific vessels. If you hold the ‘old’ VHF licence (pre-1999) you need to upgrade your qualification if you purchase new equipment. This can be done by attending this one-day course or, if no tuition is required, you can enter for direct examination.
Course topics include:
the basics of radio operation the correct frequencies (channels) to be used distress, emergency and medical assistance procedures making ship to shore telephone calls Digital Selective Calling (DSC) using simulators Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRB) Search and Rescue (SART) The course will be taught using radio simulators and will be examined by a short written test.

Whether you sail a yacht with an auxiliary diesel engine or are a motor cruising enthusiast, this course could not just save you money, but one day could save your life.

The certificate awarded conforms with the eligibility requirements of section 6.01 of the ISAF Special Regulations for category 0, 1 and some category 2 offshore races.
These regulations require a percentage of the crew to have taken personal survival training. Full details of the Special Regulations can be found in the ISAF website on the right.

RYA Sea Survival
A one-day course for anyone going to sea, providing an understanding of how to use the safety equipment on board your boat. A genuine lifesaver
Cruising is one of the safest leisure sporting activities, and 99.9% of those afloat will never use their liferaft. However, if you are part of the unlucky 0.1% your chances of survival will be greatly increased if you understand how to use the equipment and how to help yourself. It is a well-proven fact that, in the event of an emergency at sea, people with training are more likely to survive. An important part of the course is a practical session in a swimming pool. Experience first hand the problems of entering an uncooperative liferaft and assisting others while fully kitted out in wet weather gear and a lifejacket. Course topics include: liferafts and the equipment they contain survival techniques the design of lifejackets medical aspects of sea survival search and rescue techniques

International Certificate of Competence
Cruising Abroad
If you want to cruise outside the UK you are likely to need certification, often in the form of the International Certificate of Competence (ICC).
RYA courses can help you achieve this, with the Powerboat Level 2 and Day Skipper certificates (or above) providing evidence of your competence to qualify you for the ICC.
Experienced skippers can also qualify for the ICC by taking a direct assessment, rather than a full course, through one of our training centres or an appropriate affiliated club.
In addition the ICC, you should also be aware of the local requirements for skippers, boats and licences wherever you go and, if possible, take with you translations of the certificates that you hold.
Please note costs are dependent on experience / direct assessment so please call to discuss
Entry requirements:
The ICC and Proof of Competence Abroad
As the skipper of a vessel, you must ensure that you are aware of any requirement for qualifications before venturing into another country's jurisdiction.
The requirement for a certificate of competence varies from country to country. Sometimes they are required for coastal waters, sometimes for inland waters, sometimes for neither and sometimes for both. Please also Read the RYA's advice at http://www.rya.org.uk/INFOADVICE/BOATINGABROAD/ICC/Pages/default.aspx
